CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Ianswered a few more questions about the last time I’d seen Giuseppe, and I was grateful to escape once Campbell dismissed me. I didn’t bother to attempt to learn anything in return—this man wasn’t giving anything away.

I left the cottage, deciding to make my way to my meeting spot with Redvers. I was early, so I walked slowly, enjoying the rare sunny day while wondering where Giuseppe could have gone to. It wouldn’t be too difficult to find out whether he’d left the island—with such a small population, especially this time of year, the ferry operator would no doubt know whether he’d taken Giuseppe back to Mull. Giuseppe had a rather distinctive look about him that made him difficult to forget—or, rather, easy to remember. I would walk down to the ferry dock later and ask the crew if they’d seen him.

As I crested the hill near the fairy circle, I saw two figures in the distance, standing very near where I’d found Netta’s body. I paused and squinted, finally determining that I was looking at Dion Fortune and Robert Nightingale. From the distance I stood at I couldn’t see their expressions, but I could see that Robert was poking a finger at Dion quite emphatically. I considered going back the way I’d come, but it looked as though Dion had already spotted me. She quickly turned and marched away from Nightingale in the opposite direction of the village. Nightingale stood there for a moment before following her.

What had that been about? And had they recognized me despite the distance? As much as I hoped that they hadn’t, I thought it was likely that Dion at least knew exactly who I was.

I continued on my way, my pace quite a bit faster now, and I made it to my meeting place with Redvers well before our appointed time. I walked up and down the small beach for more than half an hour before Redvers finally appeared. He looked dapper in his tweed suit, a plaid scarf wrapped around his neck, and I took a moment to appreciate my fiancé before I described what I had just seen to him.

“Perhaps Nightingale learned that Dion is the one publishing information about their group.”

“How would he have learned that?” I asked.

“The same way I did?” Redvers suggested.

“If Nightingale searched Dion’s room, it would mean he had reason to be suspicious of her in the first place,” I said.

“That’s true.”

“Hmm,” I said, turning over the possibilities in my head.

Redvers took my hand and led me into a cove that was protected from the wind. The skin on my face appreciated it—I could feel the windburn on my cheeks. He set about spreading out the plaid wool blanket that he’d brought along with him, while I paced around him.

“The police were at the McCrary cottage this morning.” I told Redvers about the police inspector and his hostility toward me and Fiona.

Redvers’ eyebrows went up in surprise. “Last I heard, the police were closing the case and writing it off as natural causes.
